A man has been charged with stealing a £50,000 ceremonial badge of office used by the mayoress of Carlisle.

The badge, which had been part of the mayoral regalia since the late 1940s, was taken from a strong room at the city's civic centre on 15 January.

Gavin Fletcher, 35, of Roman Road, Penrith, who is not a Carlisle City Council employee, is due to appear in court on 8 February.

Police said the badge had been broken up and only a few segments recovered.
