Cumbria floods: Man in court over flood thefts

A man has appeared in court accused of thefts from flood-affected homes in Carlisle.

Martin Howlett, 30, of Warwick Road, Carlisle, is charged with burglary and theft.

The charges relate to the theft of electrical items and clothing from properties on Petteril Street and Eldred Street early on 9 January.

He was remanded in custody by North Cumbria magistrates, pending a hearing at Carlisle Crown Court on 15 February.

No plea was entered.

A 43-year-old man also arrested on suspicion of burglary has been bailed.
