A man who was caught trying to burgle empty properties in Carlisle during the Storm Desmond floods has been jailed.

Daniel Dixon, 28, of Marks Avenue, Carlisle, was found with a 14in metal bar, gloves and a torch on Lowther Street at about 18:45 GMT on 6 December.

He pleaded guilty at Carlisle Crown Court to going equipped for burglary and was sentenced to 16 months.

The court heard Dixon had previous convictions for burglary.

Judge Peter Davis said: "There can be only one sentence for this dreadful offence that you wanted to inflict upon a community that was ravaged by Storm Desmond and the floods."
