Man in court over attempted rape of girl, nine

A Cumbrian man has appeared in court accused of attempting to rape a nine-year-old girl.

John Newton, 26, of Fisher Street, Workington, was remanded in custody by magistrates in Workington, pending a Crown Court hearing next month.

He faces charges of attempted rape, assault with intent to commit a sexual offence, voyeurism and common assault.

Police said the girl was attacked at a cafe in Vulcan Park, Workington on the evening of 26 August.

Mr Newton is also accused of breaching a previous sexual offences prevention order.
