Kendal death crash driver jailed for killing friend

A driver who killed his friend crashing at high speed into a concrete gatepost has been jailed for eight years and banned from driving for six.

James Oliver, 29, was driving a silver Peugeot when it left the road on a bend on Aynam Road, Kendal.

Robert Clinton, 21, a front seat passenger, died in the crash late on the evening of 23 March.

Oliver, of Lancing Close, Halewood, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to causing Mr Clinton's death by dangerous driving.

Police investigators discovered the car doing 60 mph when it hit the gatepost.

Another 21-year-old man on the back seat was cut and bruised. Oliver was taken to hospital with multiple fractures.

At Carlisle Crown Court Judge Paul Batty QC said he would have to live with the knowledge that he killed a friend whom he regarded as his "little brother".

The jail term and driving disqualification are to be served concurrently.
