The theft of a sketch by the artist LS Lowry is being investigated by Cumbria Police.

A force spokesman said it had been taken from a house in Cartmel, south of Kendal, and appealed for anyone with information to contact police.

Lowry, who died in 1976, is known for his paintings of north west England's industrial landscapes, including mines, factories and terraced houses.

Some of his sketches have sold for tens of thousands of pounds.
