Vickerstown Primary School opens

A new school in Cumbria costing £6m has opened its doors to pupils.

The old Vickerstown Primary School, which ran for 108 years, has moved from Latona Street, on Walney Island off Barrow, to a new building on Mill Lane.

The development is part of a £12.8m investment programme in three primary schools in Barrow, including Barrow Island and St George's schools.

Head teacher Michelle Phizacklea, said they were "very excited" for the children to see the new school.

"The school had been functioning for 108 years and the building was tired.

"It needed a vast amount of work doing to keep it up to scratch... it was just not really fit for purpose any longer.

"We can't wait to see the children's faces when we open the doors."
