Cumbrian van driver dies in crash with crane unit

A van driver died in a collision with a crane unit on a main road in Cumbria.

The crash happened on the A595 at Bolton Low Houses at 1420 GMT on Wednesday. The two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions.

Eric Simon Fisher, known as Simon, of Redmain, Cockermouth, was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His 14-year-old son, who was a passenger in the van, and the crane unit driver were not hurt.

'Valiant efforts'

Cumbria Police praised the actions of passers-by, including two off-duty police, who provided first aid before emergency services arrived.

Sgt Jo Fawcett said: "I would like to praise the efforts of passers-by, including two off duty Cumbria Police officers and a nurse, who made valiant efforts to save Mr Fisher's life.

"A full investigation into the incident is now under way and our thoughts are with the family who are being supported by a police family liaison officer."

The road was closed for more than four hours for investigations to be carried out.
