Detectives investigating the fatal stabbing of a man in Carlisle have arrested two men in Scotland.

Joseph Howard, 34, died in hospital after being found badly injured at a house in Balfour Road on Sunday. Police are treating the death as murder.

In a joint operation with Strathclyde Police, two men, aged 39 and 17, both from the Carlisle area, were arrested in Kilmarnock.

They have been transferred to a custody unit in Carlisle for questioning.

Mr Howard's mother Susan said her son, who was known as Downie, was "full of life" and would be sadly missed.

She said: "On behalf of the family I would like to thank everyone for their support and sympathy at this terrible time.

"Downie was the eldest of my six children and lived life to the full. He was a true legend and will be sadly missed but never forgotten."

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses.
