Two dead in Carlisle van and car collision

Two people killed in a collision between a car and a Royal Mail van were 19-year-old friends from Carlisle, police have revealed.

Emergency services were called to the A595 at Newby Cross, Carlisle, just before 0915 GMT.

The two women in the car, Jessica Lakin, of Cross Hill Drive, and Grace Simpson, of Prescott Road, died at the scene.

The van driver was not injured. The road was closed for five hours.
