More than 20 schools in Cumbria have been closed and there were problems on some of the county's roads as the wintry conditions continued.

The A592 Kirkstone Pass, the A686 at Hartside and the B6277 between Alston and Middleton-in-Teesdale were closed.

Snow gates were shut, closing the A66 between Brough and Bowes, though the route later reopened.

Cumbria County Council said its fleet of 30 gritters was continuing to work around the clock.

As well as gritting the first and second priority routes, more minor roads listed as third priority were also being treated due to the extended nature of the cold snap.

It was also carrying out replenishment of 10,000 grit bins and salt heaps.
