A pedestrian has been found dead on the M6 in Cumbria.

At about 0430 GMT, police received a report a pedestrian was lying on the southbound carriageway, just south of junction 44, near Carlisle.

They said it appeared the person had been hit by more than one vehicle and police said they were treating it as a fail-to-stop collision.

The M6 southbound was closed between junctions 44 and 43 with diversions through Carlisle.

Police said they were trying to identify the pedestrian and are appealing for anyone who was using that stretch of motorway at the time to contact them.

Motorists travelling south from Scotland were advised to avoid the Carlisle area.
