New site for flats for Carlisle homeless people

Another area is being considered as a site for flats for homeless people in Carlisle, after residents raised concern about the original choice.

The accommodation for women and families would be built in the Water Street area of the city.

Carlisle City Council is now inviting local households and businesses to comment on the proposal.

The development was originally planned for Wood Street, but this was rejected after a public consultation.

They would replace the London Road facility which has been in operation since 1975 and has been described as no longer fit for purpose.

It is not accessible for people with disabilities and residents have to share facilities and, in some circumstances, bedrooms.

If given the go-ahead, the new development could open in 2012.
