Penrith intruder jailed for sex attack on victim

A burglar has been jailed for three years for sexually assaulting a woman after breaking into her house in Penrith.

Robert Preece-Smith broke into the woman's home in May and was rifling through her handbag when she disturbed him, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

As she tried to chase him out of the house he attacked her.

Preece-Smith, 23, of Pategill Farm, admitted burglary, common assault and sexual assault.

The court heard he 59 previous convictions, including five for indecent assault.

He was also put on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
