Warning notice issued to Albemarle Rest Home in Leamington Spa

An Adverse Findings Notice has been issued against a care home after it refused to improve its policies, the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) said.

The rarely issued notice, given in the final stage of an investigation, was issued to the Albemarle Rest Home in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

An investigation saw the LGO make a number of recommendations aimed at improving procedures to the home.

The LGO said the home, which has not yet commented, had refused to comply.

The investigation was sparked when the LGO received a complaint from a man over administrative aspects of his mother's care while at the care home in Kenilworth Road.

Adverse Findings Notices:

  • The final stage of an investigation into a privately-run care home
  • Issued where the provider has failed to comply with regulations
  • Only two such notices issued across England in 2015/16

He claimed a "Do Not Attempt Resuscitation" (DNAR) order had not been passed on when his mother was taken to hospital, and that the home did not have sound checking procedures over medication.

The LGO said it recommended the home ensured it had DNAR decisions clearly recorded on files, and that the form accompanied people when they were transferred elsewhere. It also recommended that it develop a procedure to monitor the administration of medicine.

The Albemarle Care Home said no-one was yet available to comment.
