One of the world's largest defence firms has created a base in Warwickshire and Leicestershire.

Lockheed Martin UK has opened at the MIRA Technology Park which straddles Nuneaton and Hinckley.

The defence firm said 10 people will work there initially, with a further 20 being taken on by the end of the year.

Vice-president Alan McCormick, said: "We are delighted to be working with MIRA, who have a complementary range of skills and expertise..."

The US-based firm has a worldwide workforce of more than 120,000 employees and in 2011 announced profits of £2.6bn.

It already has 14 bases in the UK and is currently contracted by the Ministry of Defence to upgrade the army's warrior armoured fighting vehicles.

The contract is worth more than £600m.

The £50m MIRA Technology Park opened in November with predictions of creating 2,000 jobs by 2020.
