Foleshill swimming pool in Coventry set to close
A Coventry swimming pool looks set to close after the city council's cabinet approved plans to build a new £7.5m complex at a nearby sports centre.
The plans, which still need approval from full council, would see Foleshill Sport and Leisure Centre closed and a pool built at AT7, Courthouse Green.
The two sites are about a mile apart and the cabinet said it had considered a petition signed by 6,600 people.
Protesters are unhappy that the pool is moving from a deprived area.
Local resident Will Bromwich said: "It's disappointment, not just for me but if you're disabled or elderly you can't trek a mile-and-a-half to go to the facility.
'Worst health issues'
"They're depriving Foleshill and we have the worst health issues."
The Labour-led authority's cabinet member for community safety and equalities, Councillor Phil Townshend, said they were simply relocating the facility.
Mr Townshend said: "We're putting it somewhere close by, putting transport arrangements in and making it more viable with a broader range of opportunities.
"I don't accept that the area of deprivation ends at the boundary of Foleshill ward.
"There's deprivation in Longford, Upper Stoke and Holbrooks.
"Some of the most deprived communities in the city are on that side."
