New unit built at veterans' home in Southam

A new unit for war veterans who need long-term dementia care is under construction in Warwickshire.

It is being built beside the Royal British Legion's residential care home for ex-servicemen and women at Southam.

The Royal British Legion said the new unit would provide specialist care for 30 people when it opens in April.

Research by the legion suggests 115,000 veterans in the UK will need residential care by 2020, but there is currently accommodation for just 1,000.

Sebastian Hargreaves, the charity's county manager for Warwickshire, said: "I think that charities are being leant on more and more over being able to support the armed forces community.

"And many people would argue that it's the government's and the MoD's responsibility to look after service personnel and ex-service personnel."
