The search for a man washed out to sea has been called off after a body was found on the beach at Porthleven.

A 27-year-old man, from Surrey, disappeared early on New Year's Day after he was hit by a powerful wave at Loe Bar near Porthleven in Cornwall.

The police said formal identification has yet to take place, but Falmouth coastguard said it had called off the search for the man.

He was with three friends when the accident happened at 01:00 GMT.

An earlier search had been restricted to coastguard teams ashore because of heavy rain, strong winds and poor visibility.

Coastguard teams from Porthleven, Mullion, Porthousestock and Penzance have been involved.

Tago McLeod, from Falmouth coastguard, said: "A body has been found on the beach. As far as we're concerned we don't consider we're looking for anybody else at this time."

Mr McLeod described Loe Bar as "probably one of the most dangerous beaches we have. It is well signposted to that effect as well."
