Newquay Boardmasters surfing contest gets record entries

Record numbers of competitors are entering the main events in a Newquay surf festival, organisers have said.

More than 150 surfers will be competing in the annual Boardmasters surfing and music festival at Fistral beach later.

The best of West Country surfers will go up against international names in seven surfing categories including the Men's and Women's Open events.

There will also be live appearances from the likes of Basement Jaxx and Ben Howard at Watergate Bay.

Jayce Robinson, Alan Stokes and Russell Winter are among those taking part in the Men's Open.

In the women's category Peony Knight and Hannah Harding will be aiming for gold.

The event takes place at Fistral and Watergate beaches until 11 August.
