Redruth allotment rents to nearly double

Cornwall Council is planning to almost double the annual charge of renting an allotment in Redruth.

The cost of a Raymond Road plot is set to increase from £27 to £50 per year.

The council says the price rise will make all allotment charges in Cornwall equal.

But gardeners say their plots are only a quarter of the standard plot size and argue they should not face a price hike.

'Costs have risen'

Bob Mills, who owns three plots at the site, said: "If they were charging everyone per square metre we would be happy.

"Ours are about a quarter of the size of a normal allotment.

"We don't mind a reasonable increase, but their attitude is that they have a waiting list so if we don't pay someone else will."

Cornwall Council said in a statement: "The new charges, which work out at less than £1 per week, ensure residents pay the same for an allotment plot, no matter where they live.

"We have not increased charges in many allotments for several years while the cost of managing them has risen.

"The fee increase will be phased across all Cornwall Council allotments from next year, with the price rise increased in stages."
