Two people have been arrested following an attempted theft at a Cornish church.

The man and woman were arrested in Penzance, after CCTV footage was released of the incident.

The footage showed a man take a tool from his rucksack and attack the metal door of the safe at Gwithian Church, while a woman walked around.

The suspects spent ten minutes trying to open the safe on 2 September, before leaving. The box contained £8.80.

Church officials said that repairing the box would cost more than the £8.80 which it contained.

The 13th Century church near Hayle, opens from dawn until dusk each day, and would continue to do so, officials confirmed.
