A man has pleaded guilty to a rape that took place in Bristol 35 years ago.

Stephen McCafferty, 62, of Thetford, Norfolk, was charged with raping a 22-year-old woman on Wells Road, Knowle, in 1981.

Avon and Somerset Police said a "significant development" had led to his arrest.

At Bristol Crown Court, Judge William Hart warned McCafferty that the only option open to him was "one of imprisonment".

The case was adjourned until 26 February while pre-sentence reports are prepared.
