Bristol police officer investigated over skull fracture

A police sergeant has been given a gross misconduct notice after a man suffered a fractured skull while in custody.

The man was arrested on 8 May outside a Bristol nightclub, and held in Keynsham.

At about 02:00 BST there was "an incident" with the Avon and Somerset Police custody sergeant, and the man was taken to Southmead hospital.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is now investigating.

The man also had bleeding on the brain and a perforated ear drum, police said. He has since been released from hospital.

The officer was interviewed under criminal caution on suspicion of unlawfully wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm.

A police spokesperson said: "We acted promptly to secure all evidence and suspended the officer from duty until further notice."
