A man was killed by a 13-tonne lorry in Bristol after it was driven through a red light, a court has heard.

Teacher Jake Thompson, 27, died from severe head injuries five days after he was struck at a pedestrian crossing on the A37 in May 2011.

A witness told Bristol Crown Court driver Paul Vowles swerved to avoid Mr Thompson when he stepped into the road as the lights changed.

Mr Vowles denies causing death by careless driving.

The trial continues.
