A Bristol postman had to be rescued by the fire service after he accidentally locked himself inside his van.

Avon Fire and Rescue said a crew from Bedminster station was called to the post office in Weston Road, Long Ashton at about 17:45 GMT on Wednesday.

The firemen used hydraulic spreaders to break open the back door of the van to free the postman trapped inside.

A spokesman said the call took seven minutes and was a "routine rescue dealt with quickly and efficiently".

Royal Mail was unavailable for comment.
