Bristol man becomes permanent deacon at city's cathedral

A Bristol man has been ordained a deacon during a special service at the city's cathedral.

John Scanlon, from St Augustine of Canterbury in Downend, was recognised by Bishop Declan following his "journey" of just over 10 years.

His new role of deacon - which he called "a huge commitment and a wonderful privilege" - includes feeding the homeless and gospel preaching.

Paul White of SS Luke and Teresa in Wincanton, Somerset, was also ordained.

Ordination is the Church's official recognition of a person's sense of calling to be a priest or deacon.
