Illegal parkers near Southmead Hopsital to be 'educated'

Motorists parking illegally near Southmead Hospital in Bristol will face being "educated", police have said.

Residents have complained that some people visiting the hospital park in nearby streets and block driveways.

Community officer Pc Ben Lavender said parking "illegally and inconsiderately was unacceptable".

A new super hospital is currently being built at Southmead which has reduced the number of parking spaces available for patients.

The new hospital, costing £430m, is due to open in 2014.

Police officers and Bristol City Council traffic enforcement officers will patrol the streets on Thursday.

Pc Lavender said officers would also be there "as often as they could be" to tackle the problem in the future.

"[Residents] have come to us at neighbourhood forum meetings and raised it as a priority and we are here to tackle that problem," he said.
