A Roman Catholic private school in Bristol which went into administration could become a primary-aged academy.

Bristol City Council has applied to the government to establish an academy on the site of St Ursula's school.

The school went into administration in 2010 but has been run by parents' group Oasis since the council bought it.

The council option is one of three potential routes for the school with two other groups of parents vying to run it.

The Oasis Parents Action Group wants to run an all-through faith school while opposing group Parents Voice wants to run an all-through non-denominational school.

The bid from Parents Voice has been granted initial government approval while the bid from the Oasis Parents Action Group has yet to receive a response.

'Urgent need'

Any new school could begin in September when the council's current short-term deal with Oasis runs out.

A statement from the council said there was an "urgent need" to find additional primary school places for the city.

It said: "Bristol City Council's priority for the former St Ursula's school site is to create new primary school places.

"A proposal to run a primary academy on the site has been submitted to the Secretary of State and a decision is expected by the end of the month.

"The council has also commissioned a feasibility study of the site, to give clear information on the number of pupils that can be accommodated [and] the condition of buildings."

Any council-backed academy would be run by an outside organisation.
