New jobs as Bristol firm wins anti-terrorist contract

A Bristol firm is creating 24 new jobs after winning a £10m contract to provide anti-terrorist road blockers and gates in the Middle East.

Avon Barrier Company, based in Ashton Vale, will double its production space and take on extra welders, fabricators and electrical technicians.

Kuwait Oil Company has ordered products for 90 of its sites, from small pumping stations to large oil terminals.

The defences are designed to be able to stop a truck travelling at 50mph.

Paul Jeffrey, Avon Barrier Company's managing director, said: "This order builds on our Middle East and international success and means that we can grow the business by more than 30% over the next two years which is great news for Bristol, our existing staff and those looking for jobs."

He said their growth in the area was down to oil and gas companies needing high levels of security against potential terrorist attacks, especially vehicle-borne explosive devices.
