Family stuck in mud on Weston beach rescued

A family and their dog were rescued by hovercraft after becoming stuck in mud on a beach at Weston-super-Mare.

The two adults and two young girls were believed to be suffering from hypothermia and exhaustion after becoming trapped 800m (875yds) from safety.

The incident happened at Royal Sands just before 1630 BST.

Coastguards helped the family until fire crews reached them by hovercraft and took them to an ambulance.
