Birmingham terror accused remanded in custody

A man accused of being a member of so-called Islamic State has appeared in court to face terrorism charges.

Awat Hamasalih, 34, of Finchley Road, Kingstanding, Birmingham, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

He is charged with belonging to a proscribed organisation, namely Islamic State, on or before 16 November, 2016.

He is also charged with having documents for a purpose connected with the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism.

Hamasalih was remanded in custody on Thursday and will next appear at the Old Bailey on December 9.
