Police are hunting for a driver who knocked down an 88-year-old grandmother in a fatal hit-and-run.

Mary Elizabeth Humpherson, known as Betty, was struck on Birmingham Road in Great Barr, Birmingham on Friday.

She was taken to hospital but died later that day. A Ford Mondeo was abandoned at the scene, police said.

In a statement, the pensioner's family said they were "devastated" at the loss of "a kind-hearted, sincere and caring lady who always put others first."

They said: "Betty was a loving mother, grandmother and friend to many in Great Barr."

Sgt Chris Ridge, from West Midlands Police, said: "We are following up various lines of enquiry as we continue to work towards tracing the driver."
