A head teacher has been suspended as part of an inquiry into allegations of financial irregularities at a school, a statement said.

Heather Powell was suspended as head of St Barnabas Church of England (CofE) primary school in Erdington, Birmingham, last Friday.

Parents received a letter confirming Ms Powell was on a leave of absence.

In a statement, the CofE said it would ensure any disruption to pupils was "kept to an absolute minimum".

It said: "Any accusations of malpractice in our schools are treated very seriously and The Church of England - Birmingham is committed to supporting the school through this difficult process."

The CofE said it understood the suspension with immediate effect last Friday was "to allow time for an investigation into financial irregularities".

Parents were then written to after advice from Birmingham City Council was sought, the CofE said.
