An elderly man suffered a broken hip when he was dragged from his car by robbers in Bilston.

Michael Green, 84, a former big band drummer and regular on the jazz circuit, had just left the Trumpet Pub in High Street when the attackers struck at about 23:30 BST on Friday.

They took his Toyota Avensis but crashed it shortly afterwards.

A 16-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and bailed pending further inquiries.

Father-of-three Mr Green, who walks with the aid of a stick, was left with injuries needing surgery and is recovering in hospital.

'Cowardly attack'

In a statement, his daughter said the attack had a "massive effect on him, both physically and mentally."

"I can't begin to tell you how shocked we are, that someone could do this to my dad," she said.

"The day before his attack he had booked a holiday abroad - it is unlikely he will be able to go now.

"He is the kindest, politest man I know, a real proper old-fashioned gentleman and I am proud to call him my dad."

Acting Det Ch Insp Pete Dunn branded the robbery "a motiveless and cowardly attack on a vulnerable and elderly man".

He said he believed three men were involved.

"This pub is a lifeline for Michael and to be attacked in this way is totally unacceptable," he said.

"I will do everything within my power to bring these culprits to justice and I am appealing for the community's help."
