A 25-year-old man has lost the sight in one eye after being stabbed by a man begging for money in a restaurant.

West Midlands Police has released CCTV of a man they want to speak to in connection with the attack at Spices restaurant in Soho Road, Birmingham, on 5 December.

Det Con Sharon Duncan said despite offering the man food, the victim had been hit with an unknown object.

Emergency surgery failed to prevent him becoming blind in his left eye.

"His eye was saved, but unfortunately he has lost the sight in it," Ms Duncan said.

"This is a devastating loss to a young man, who just appeared to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."

She said the victim and a friend had been approached outside the restaurant by a man asking for a cigarette, which they gave him.

The man then followed them inside. Ms Duncan said the friends offered to buy the man food, but he continued to ask for cash "five or six times".

After being refused, she said the man had struck the victim.
