A man who doused his former girlfriend in petrol and set her alight in front of a child has been jailed for 19 years.

Damion Sheldon, from Dudley, tipped petrol on the woman in Haden Walk, Rowley Regis, in December.

The 42-year-old was convicted of attempted murder and committing arson recklessly at Wolverhampton Crown Court last month.

Police said Sheldon, of Russells Hall Road, had been "jilted" by his partner.

He was sentenced to 15 years for attempted murder and four years for arson to be served consecutively.

Det Con Andy Barnsley, from West Midlands Police, said Sheldon went to set fire to his ex-partner's home in the dead of night and when disturbed by the woman, he doused her in petrol and set fire to her in front of young girl.

"But this horror wasn't enough for Sheldon who then coolly walked into the house and set fire to the family home where a baby was sleeping.

"Like a coward he then ran off in an attempt to evade justice and when captured tried to deny any knowledge of the offence, blaming his actions on alcohol."
