A woman has died after the car she was in collided with a van in Birmingham.

The 18-year-old died in hospital after suffering multiple injuries in the crash that happened on Gravelly Hill, close to the A38(M).

Another passenger, a man, is in a life-threatening condition with serious head and internal injuries. Two others suffered head and leg injuries.

A 19-year-old man - who was also in the car - has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. He was uninjured.

'Damage to passenger side'

The van driver was also uninjured and the road in the Erdington area of the city has since re-opened following the crash in the early hours.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said the car had sustained "very serious damage to the passenger side" after colliding with the van that had a cherry picker on the back.

West Midlands Police said a number of roads were closed while emergency crews attempted to free the casualties from the car.

They were reopened at about 06:00 BST and the force is appealing for witnesses.
