A three-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car in Birmingham.

The child, who has not yet been identified, was hit on Rookery Road in Handsworth, at the junction of Mervyn Road, at about 10:15 BST.

He was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital where he later died, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

Police said the road was closed while forensic examinations took place and specialist collision investigators were at the scene.

A post-mortem examination is expected to take place in the next few days.
