Double Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington has officially opened a new £9m leisure complex in the Black Country.

Tipton Leisure Centre includes a 25m (82ft) six lane pool, a gymnasium and dance studio.

Sandwell Council said it was part of plans to improve local facilities, with new leisure centres being built in West Bromwich, Oldbury and Smethwick.

The 23-year-old held a coaching session with youngsters.

The children swam across the pool with the official plaque commemorating the occasion, the council said.

Adlington became Britain's first female to win Olympic gold in the pool in 48 years, with 400m and 800m freestyle victories at the 2008 Beijing Games.

She announced her retirement in February.
