Woman killed in Birmingham city centre crash

A man has been arrested after a city centre crash which left two people seriously injured and one woman dead.

West Midlands Police said the collision happened at 13:45 GMT after officers tried to stop a Renault Laguna, which then crashed into a Ford Fiesta and an Audi on Landor Street, Birmingham.

A woman in the Fiesta was pronounced dead in hospital. The driver of the Laguna is in police custody.

It has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

A police spokesman said: "A police car attempted to stop a Renault Laguna due to the nature of its driving, however the car failed to stop for officers when directed to do so."

A man and a woman who were in the Audi at the time of the crash were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said family liaison officers were supporting relatives of the dead woman.

The Laguna's driver, a 25-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and a drugs offence.

Landor Street was closed for officers to conduct investigations at the scene.
