A man charged with murdering two Big Issue sellers who were stabbed in the centre of Birmingham has appeared at the city's crown court.

John Ward, 23, of no fixed address, was remanded in custody until his next court appearance in April.

Wayne Busst, 32, and Ian Gladwish, 31, both from the city, were stabbed in Union Street shortly before 18:00 GMT on Friday.

Despite first aid from passers-by and police officers they died at the scene.

One of the men was stabbed outside Sainsbury's in Union Street, while the other was found slumped nearby outside a side entrance to Boots.

Police had said there could have been hundreds of witnesses to the stabbings.
