Oldbury burns suspect 'dropped off' at hospital

A man suffered 60 per cent burns, thought to have been sustained while trying to strip metal from an electricity sub-station.

West Midlands Police were called to an explosion at the sub-station in Oldbury during the early hours.

A spokesman said the station itself was badly damaged in the explosion. An amount of metal, including copper wiring, had been cut from the unit.

A 21-year-old man was later admitted to Birmingham's City Hospital.

Det Sgt Carl Russell said the man had suffered extensive burns, from his ankles up to his scalp.

This type of injury, he said, is consistent with having been electrocuted.

"He remains in a critical condition in hospital," he said.

The injured man is thought to have been taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.

Police are appealing for the car driver to come forward and also for anyone who saw anything suspicious at the sub-station at the Granada Industrial Estate.
