A man whose body was found in a canal in Birmingham has been named by police.

Brendan Ellard, 60, from the city, was homeless at the time of his death, West Midlands Police said.

His body was recovered from the Birmingham and Worcester canal by the Mailbox bar and shopping complex on Sunday after it was seen by a passerby.

Mr Ellard's death is being treated as unexplained after a post-mortem examination failed to establish a cause of death.

Toxicology tests are to be conducted.

Police said the body appeared to have been in the water for some time.

Det Insp Harry Harrison said: "Anyone who may have seen Mr Ellard or witnessed any incidents taking place near to the canal between Saturday 23 October and when his body was recovered two weeks later, must contact us."
