Rail services at Birmingham New Street have been severely disrupted by a full station evacuation.

Hundreds of people were told to evacuate the building when a number of fire alarms sounded at about 1005 GMT.

West Midlands Police said it was a false alarm. Officers said they suspected there was a fault with the station's fire alarm systems.

Network Rail said the station reopened at about 1055 GMT but services would take some time to get back to normal.
