Woman killed in city centre road sign crash

A female driver has died after being involved in a crash in Birmingham city centre.

The crash happened on St Chad's Queensway, near Lancaster Circus, at about 0330 GMT on Thursday.

The 30-year-old driver, from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, was cut free from her vehicle after it is believed the car hit a road sign, police said.

She was taken to hospital where she died. A 43-year-old passenger in the car suffered minor injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or the Hyundai Coupe involved travelling in the area was urged to contact West Midlands Police.

A police spokesman said: "While the exact cause is to be established, officers believe the pair had been in the city centre and were heading towards the motorway when the Hyundai Coupe left the road and collided with a road sign.

"A lamppost was also damaged."
