An ice rink is closing to make way for major refurbishment plans worth £7.7m.

Slough Ice Arena, Berkshire, will close this weekend and reopen in late 2017.

Improvements include extending the front of the building, upgrading the changing rooms and building a new reception area and cafe.

Slough Borough Council said the rink, which was built in 1986 and was used to train stars featuring on ITV's Dancing on Ice competition in 2014, was in a "shabby state".

"At thirty years of age, the building now requires extensive mechanical and electrical upgrading as well as internal refurbishment to the main facilities and fixtures and fittings," a spokesman said.

A temporary ice rink will be built in Montem car park to ensure regular users are able to continue skating, the authority added.
