A murder investigation has been launched following the unexplained death of an elderly woman near Reading, police have said.

Josephine Williamson, 83, was treated for injuries at a property in Elm Lane, Lower Earley, but died at the scene.

An 88-year-old man was airlifted to hospital with stomach injuries and later arrested on suspicion of murder.

Next of kin have been informed and police said it appeared to be an isolated incident.

Det Ch Insp Mark Glover said: "This is a very early stage in the investigation and we are in the process of determining the circumstances leading up to this woman's death and the man's injuries.

"However, at this stage it appears to be an isolated incident with no other party involvement."
