Elderly woman punched by mugger in Reading

An elderly woman was punched to the floor by a mugger as she arrived home from shopping in Berkshire.

The 89-year-old was in Norcott Hill, in Tilehurst, Reading, at about 2000 GMT on Friday when she was punched in the back and fell to her knees.

The woman had returned from a shopping trip on the bus and was opening her gate when the attack happened.

The thief snatched her Marks and Spencer shopping bag and a brown handbag containing bank cards.

He ran off in the direction of Edgar Milward Close pursued by a neighbour who eventually lost sight of him.

Det Con Jon Nicholls, of Thames Valley Police, said: "This was a particularly callous attack where the offender has targeted an elderly lady.

"This has obviously caused the victim a lot of distress and she was fortunate not to suffer any serious injuries."
