A second student has been diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) at an 1,100-pupil Berkshire school.

The principal of John Madejski Academy, Catherine Shaw, confirmed letters had been sent to parents of youngsters at the Reading school.

A number of pupils at the academy, catering for 11 to 18-year-olds, are to be screened for TB later this week.

Ms Shaw said the first student was diagnosed with the disease in August this year.

This latest case was uncovered after pupils in close contact with that student were screened in mid-October.

Ms Shaw told BBC News: "The Health Protection Agency are managing this [case] successfully and I am working closely with them."

Letters were sent to the parents of pupils about two weeks ago.

The academy, which opened in 2006, offers a curriculum centred around sport.
